Camané first came into contact with fado purely by chance when, convalescing from a childhood illness, he was rummaging through his parents’ record collection and discovered the leading names of fado: Amália Rodrigues, Fernando Maurício, Lucília do Carmo, Maria Teresa de Noronha, Alfredo Marceneiro and Carlos do Carmo.

His record Uma Noite de Fados, acclaimed by the specialised critics, led to him being voted the most representative voice of the new generation of fado singers, resulting in the quality of his work being widely acknowledged by the public. Since then he has made countless appearances in Portugal and overseas, performing in France, Holland, Italy and Spain. The beginning of 1998 was marked the appearance of his new work, Na Linha da Vida, which attracted particular attention from the media, living up to the expectations created by Uma Noite de Fados and consolidating Camané’s position as one of fado’s most impressive voices.

In 1998 he made many appearances in Portugal, the highlight being his Expo 98 performances, as well as participating in the show De Sol a Lua - Flamenco e Fado and in several European music festivals, such as the  “Tombées de La Nuit”, in Rennes and the “Les Méditerranées à l’Européen” in Paris. In October, when his work Na Linha da Vida was released by EMI in Holland and Belgium, he performed at several venues in those countries.

In early 2000, Camané took another step forward in his career when his third album, Esta Coisa da Alma, was released simultaneously in Belgium, Holland and Portugal. A concert tour was scheduled to coincide with the album release and included some major venues in those countries. The highlights of the tour were two sold-out performances at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam and the appearance at the Bruges Festival, followed by concerts in Spain, Switzerland, Germany and France.

November 2001 saw the launch of his fourth CD,  Pelo Dia Dentro, which went silver just three weeks after it was released.

Still in the first three months of 2003, a compilation was released as part of Hemisphere’s The Art Of collection, with the particularity of including re-recordings done in late 2002 of tracks from Uma Noite de Fados, Camané’s first CD. 2003 was also marked by appearances in Portugal and abroad and by the release of his first live CD, Camané - Como Sempre... Como Dantes, which went gold, giving rise to a concert tour in Portugal in 2004.

Having been invited by the Teatro São Luiz  to do a series of shows in the Jardim de Inverno (Winter Garden), Camané put together his project  Outras Canções. At the six concerts that made up the series he sang songs by top names in Portuguese and Brazilian music, that he considers as his landmarks in a variety of musical genres.
At the end of the year, the CD Humanos was released, a project that Camané and other Portuguese musicians developed as a tribute to the late singer António Variações. Besides this project, Camané continued performing Como Sempre...Como Dantes throughout 2005, taking to the stage at a variety of venues in Portugal and overseas, including Canada, Luxemburg and Paris (Île de France Festival). He won the “Amália Rodrigues” prize in the category Best Male Fado Singer.

In March 2006, Camané’s first DVD, Ao vivo no S. Luiz (Live at the S. Luiz), was released, featuring recordings of the concerts performed at the S. Luiz Municipal Theatre as part of the Como Sempre... tour. Particularly worthy of note on his 2006 schedule was the invitation from the Camões Institute to perform two concerts during the  “Fiera Internazionale del Libro” in Turin and the show given at the Huvila Tent during the Helsinki Festival, which was highly acclaimed by public and press.

After a busy year of concerts both in Portugal and overseas, Camané released his fifth album of original recordings in April 2007. Sempre de Mim, comprising 16 tracks, went straight to the no. 1 position in the national sales chart and has already gone gold.

Following the launch of Sempre de Mim, Camané set off on a tour of Portugal, performing for the first time in his own name at such legendary venues as the Coliseu in Lisbon and Oporto. Another noteworthy appearance was at the Womex 2008 fair in Seville, the largest World Music fair in the world. In 2009, the tour Sempre de Mim continues on the road. Camané will be taking to the MED stage on the 27th of June.
