Donna Maria

Donna Maria is the name of a trio from Greater Lisbon, with vocals by Marisa Pinto, Miguel A. Majer on drums and programming and Ricardo on keyboards and samplers. They are heavily influenced by electronic music and have a deeply Portuguese soul that is clearly visible in their use of traditional instruments such as the Portuguese guitar and the accordion.

In this context, Donna Maria are hoping to give a sought-after freshness back to Portuguese music by means of their electronic and contemporary vision. Their album Tudo É Para Sempre includes works by a handful of composers and special participation by Portuguese and Brazilian artists: duets with Paulo de Carvalho, Vitorino (in the brilliant Lado A Lado, a version of a classic made popular by Tony de Matos), Pedro Luís e a Parede and Letícia Vasconcelos. Also involved were Ciro Cruz (bassist from Gabriel O Pensador, a first class musician), Paulinho Moska (one of the most highly regarded Brazilian composers, who has done Donna Maria proud with a truly beautiful song) and Gil do Carmo (in the recital of the poem that brings the album to its close). “Overall, this is a brilliant debut, a convincing star (…) this record is forever. For the time being, all we can do is pay them tribute”, is how João Gobern (Correio da Manhã) describes Donna Maria following the launch of their debut album in 2004.

Two years later, the Portuguese trio presented their second work, Música Para Ser Humano, which was also applauded by the Portuguese critics. “With their second album, Donna Maria have fine-tuned their definition-defying style”, writes Pedro Dias de Almeida (Visão).

Donna Maria will performing at the MED Festival’s Cerca Stage on the 26th of June.
