Bajofondo A “collective of composers, singers and artists”, is how Bajofondo refer to themselves. Led by Gustavo Santaollala, winner of a Grammy for best producer and an Oscar and Golden Globe for the soundtracks of Brokeback Mountain (2005) and Babel (2006), the Argentinean-Uruguayan collective is one of the ambassadors of electro-tango (or electronic tango) which, as the name suggests, is a fusion of acoustic tango with electronic music.

Apart from Santaollala (guitar, percussion, vocals), the other members of Bajofondo are Juan Campodónico (programming, sampling, guitar, beats), Luciano Supervielle (piano, keyboards, scratching), Javier Casalla (violin), Martín Ferrés (bandoneón), Gabriel Casacuberta (vertical bass, electric bass), Adrián Sosa (percussion), and Verónica Loza (VJ, vocals).

In 2002, they launched their debut album Bajofondo Tango Club, recorded for the Vibra Records label and they have been in the public eye ever since. The first edition sold over 300 thousand copies and the collective was awarded the Latin Grammy for Best Pop Album for their work. This first album was followed by Supervielle (2004), Remixed (2006) and Mar Dulce, their most recent work, recorded in 2007 and which includes the participation of a number of special guest artists such as Nelly Furtado, Mala Rodriguez, Juan Subirá, Gustavo Cerati and Elvis Costello.

And Bajofondo’s success is far from over. Mar Dulce has been invariably acclaimed by the critics all over the world:

Bajofondo made their first appearance at the MED two years ago, when they performed the 4th edition of the festival’s closing concert on the 1st of July 2007. They so delighted the organisers that this year Bajofondo were invited back to the MED, the first time any band has been featured twice on the playbill. This year, Santaollala and his companions will be performing on the 24th of June, the opening day of the MED.
