Peace and love with positive vibes
James Chambers, a.k.a. Jimmy Cliff, was born in Saint Catherine, Jamaica. Considered a master in reggae, he was responsible for reggae’s success in Europe.
|
He was discovered, while still a youngster, by Leslie Kong, the owner of a record shop, who later also accompanied the legendary Bob Marley on his first recording.
Between musical experiences, he managed to find time to make a brief inroad into the world of cinema, playing a role in “The Harder They Come”, a film that, despite being considered a box-office failure, projected both reggae and Jimmy Cliff’s career overseas.
In the 1980s, he did a concert tour in Brazil alongside Gilberto Gil and together they played to packed audiences wherever they performed.
He remained in Brazil, working on his own projects while simultaneously taking part in recordings with other artists at their invitation. In 1982, he launched “Breakout”, an album recorded in Salvador da Bahia, and which included participations by the bands Olodum and Araketu.
During the 1990s, Cliff consolidated his reputation as master of reggae, but had no hesitation in merging the Jamaican style with other sonorities.
Jimmy Cliff currently focuses on cheerful, vibrant performances, full of positive vibes. To this end, he draws upon the help of a large group of artists. The musicians who accompany Jimmy Cliff are Desmond Jones, Christopher McDonald, Dale Haslam, Roghan Reid, Dwight Richards, Tafawee Buchsaecab, Denver Smith, Sandy Smith and Otheniel Lewis.
